Clutter Farms: A Legacy Rooted in Ohio Soil

Clutter Farms is a seventh-generation family farm located in the scenic hills of Knox County, Ohio—an area rich in history where Native American artifacts still surface from the land. The farm’s origins trace back to the early 1800s, when the Clutter family acquired a quarter-section of land granted as a Revolutionary War plot. The original farmhouse still stands today, a proud testament to the enduring legacy and humble beginnings of the Clutter lineage.

From Traditional Agriculture to Popcorn Innovation

For generations, farming was the foundation of life at Clutter Farms. In the early 1970s, Louis and Gordon Clutter introduced a new chapter by cultivating popcorn as a cash crop for a local commercial popcorn processor. Seeking a productive winter endeavor, Gordon envisioned launching a private-label popcorn brand. Without modern conveniences like the internet or mobile phones, he dedicated countless hours to research—traveling extensively, studying industry practices, and connecting with growers, processors, and equipment suppliers.

In 1974, Gordon’s vision materialized. With the help of a local artist, Clutter Farms Popcorn was born. Originally branded as “Clutter’s Indian Fields Popcorn,” the farm constructed a packaging facility and repurposed an old barn into a warehouse for 2- and 4-pound polybags. Early employees recall the hands-on nature of operations, including manually gluing boxes and drying them from the inside—an emblem of the farm’s resourcefulness and commitment.

Building a Brand, One Kernel at a Time

As the sole sales representative, Gordon spent weeks on the road introducing Clutter Farms Popcorn to local grocers and schools. The product quickly gained traction, with consumers praising its exceptional taste and freshness. Demand grew rapidly, prompting the farm to expand operations and offer popcorn year-round. What began with small retail packaging evolved into bulk 50-pound bags and totes, now distributed across multiple states and international markets.
